Was it worth it? This is the question that often crosses the mind of anyone who takes a leap of faith, leaving behind the comfort of a secure job to chase a dream. Let’s check what happened to me…
The Problem That Sparked an Idea
As a tech lead in a busy IT department, my days were often consumed by solving complex challenges and driving projects forward. Yet, one recurring issue left me feeling unproductive and frustrated: managing invoices.
Our department had a stack of services, anywhere from 10 to 15 at a time, with payments that were either one-off or recurring on a variety of schedules - monthly, quarterly, or yearly. While some services offered the convenience of sending invoices directly to the accountant, others relied on developers to forward the emails, and a few services didn’t even notify about incurred expenses.
The chaotic result? A relentless game of hide-and-seek with invoices. Tracking them down became a time sink, especially when they went to the wrong inbox or never showed up in the first place. I saw this inefficiency repeat itself with every new service added to the stack.
For a long time, I tolerated it. But as frustration mounted, an idea began to form: What if there was a system that could handle all of this for me?
Envisioning a Solution
I started thinking about what an ideal solution might look like:
Centralized Invoice Management: A single platform where all invoices from different services could be stored and accessed.
Automated Tracking and Reminders: No more manual follow-ups or forgotten invoices. The system would notify users when an invoice was overdue or missing.
Spending Insights: Beyond managing invoices, the platform could analyze spending patterns, helping businesses optimize costs.
This wasn’t just a pipe dream - it was a real need that had the potential to help countless small businesses struggling with the same inefficiencies.
Taking the Leap
In July 2024, I made the scariest yet most exhilarating decision of my life: I left my stable job to bring my vision to life. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. I had traded the security of a paycheck for sleepless nights, a steep learning curve, and the uncertainty of starting from scratch.
But I also felt an undeniable sense of purpose. The idea of building something meaningful, something that solved a real problem, was irresistible. And so, Gotbilled was born.
The Birth of Gotbilled
Gotbilled is more than just an invoicing tool; it’s a digital finance management platform designed to simplify the chaotic world of small business expense tracking. It’s built with features that I wish I had during my time as a tech lead:
Expense Tracking: Stay on top of recurring payments and never miss a due date.
Invoice Collection: Whether invoices are sent to accountants, developers, or not at all, Gotbilled ensures they are tracked and consolidated in one place.
Spending Analytics: Gain valuable insights into how much your company spends on IT services and identify opportunities to save.
Gotbilled represents not just a solution but also a culmination of months of hard work, research, and sleepless nights.
The Rollercoaster Ride
Building Gotbilled hasn’t been without its challenges. The journey has been filled with moments of doubt, where I questioned if I had made the right choice. Learning the nuances of entrepreneurship, from product design to marketing and customer acquisition, was daunting.
But alongside these challenges came moments of triumph:
Seeing the platform take shape and knowing it could genuinely make life easier for businesses.
These small victories kept me motivated and reminded me why I started this journey in the first place.
Was It Worth It?
Looking back, I can say with confidence: it was definitely worth it.
The decision to leave a secure job wasn’t easy, and the path I’ve chosen is far from straightforward. But the satisfaction of pursuing a vision, creating something from scratch, and knowing it has the potential to make a difference - it’s a feeling like no other.
Gotbilled isn’t just a product; it’s a reflection of my journey, my challenges, and my belief that frustration can lead to innovation.
A Word to Dreamers
If you’re considering taking a similar leap, my advice is simple: start.
There will be moments of doubt, but those are the moments that push you to grow. There will be challenges, but they are opportunities in disguise. And there will be successes - big and small - that make the journey worthwhile.
The journey of building Gotbilled has taught me that chasing a dream is less about the destination and more about the process. It’s about taking a problem you deeply care about and turning it into a solution that can help others.
So, was it worth it? For me, the answer is clear. And if you have a dream worth chasing, I hope you find your answer too.
Gotbilled began as a simple idea born out of frustration, but today, it’s a testament to the power of pursuing what truly matters. Here’s to the rollercoaster ride of following your dreams - it’s terrifying, thrilling, and absolutely worth it.
